Michele and Craig Young in the Dolomites • August 15 - 19, 2016

Michele and Craig, from the Lake Tahoe basin, spent a few days with Mark in the Dolomites. This was their second visit. The weather was generally fair, though we did have pretty consistent afternoon buildup and thunderstorms.

Return to all recent trips

For our first climb we chose the Spigolo del Pollice, Cinque Dita, Which translates, roughly to the ridge of the Thumb on the 5 fingers. The prominent tower on the right side of the middle peak is the Thumb.

Typical Dolomites views.

On the NE Ridge.

Our second climb was the Via del Buco, the Piccolo Lagazuoi. Mouse over the see the line.

A beautiful day, hiking up from the car park at the Passo de Valparola.

Excellent rock on this route.

The climb ends abruptly on the shoulder of the Lagazuoi.

The "walk" down.

On Day 3 we decided to do the West Ridge Via Ferrata on the Marmolada.

Another funky Dolomites lift.

Heading up to the start of the via ferrata.

Starting up the wires.

Much higher on the route.

On the summit of the Marmolada.

The descent on the glacier.

On our 4th day, we planned on climbing a summit called the Saas de Mesdi, in the Odle group.

Here's the peak and, more or less, the line.

Unfortunately, the lateness of the hour and the threatening clouds to the west, made us reconsider our plans. But we did have a lovely hike.

Heading back to the lift.

Our last day was pent in the Sella Towers. We climbed the Freccia Route on the First Sella Tower, and then the Kostner on the Second.

In the big corner of the Kostner Route, Second Sella Tower.

Almost to the summit of the second tower.

Lots of downclimbing on the descent.

A last look up towards the First Sella Tower.
