Gran Paradiso ski tour • April 20 - 23, 2017
Fred Larke stayed on after the Bernese Oberland tour, to do some more skiing around Chamonix and finish up with a ski ascent of the Gran Paradiso. Kathy was feeling strong by now, so she took the baton.

Return to all recent trips |
![]() We started out on the classic "Vallée Noire" descent. |
![]() A bluebird day, though very cold! |
![]() We skinned up toward Pointe Helbronner, through the crevasse field high on the Géant Glacier. |
![]() Very scenic "features". |
![]() Having tagged a high point, we started back down north facing snow. |
![]() This snow was better than it looks! |
![]() This, on the other hand, was about as bad as it looks! The melt is a bit ahead of schedule this year, necessitating some tricky negotiating of bare glacier ice. Beats walking though! |
![]() Eventually walking becomes inevitable. |
![]() Arriving at the "Grotto". |
![]() Day 2, we head up the Grands Montets to ski on the Glacier des Rouges du Dolent. |
![]() Heading down the Glacier du Rognon. |
![]() We skied high up into the glacier (no pics), then cruised down lovely corn snow back to the Grands Montets. A perfect day on the Argentière Glacier. |
![]() Continuing down among the séracs. |
![]() Day 3, it's on to the Gran Paradiso National Park. After about an hour of trail walking, we are back on snow again. |
![]() Approaching the Chabod hut. |
![]() The next, and final day, we start out at first light from the hut. |
![]() Gotta go down to go up... |
![]() Mustering in the twilight. |
![]() Up much higher, we finally regain the sunshine. |
![]() Getting closer now! |
![]() The exciting last steps to the summit! |
![]() We made it! |
![]() It took a little while to get down to the nice corn snow, but when we found it, it was delightful. |
![]() But all good things must come to and end. Footsore and ready for dinner! Thanks again Fred and hope to see you back again soon. |
