Fred Larke skiing in the Berner Oberland • May 8 - 11, 2012
Fred Larke was back again this year, this time on his own, to help us close out our ski guiding season in the Bernese Oberland. |
A video showing highlights of the great skiing we had this trip! |
![]() Fred at the base of a great corn run. |
![]() On day 1 we rode the train to th Jungfraujoch, then raced the weather to get over the shoulder of the Trugberg. |
![]() Coming in fast, unfortunately the clouds engulfed us just in time for our descent. |
![]() Soupy conditions on and above the ground! |
![]() Approaching our home for the night, the Konkordia hut, we see others descending the famous ladders we have yet to climb. |
![]() The next morning we're on our way over the Grunhornlücke to the Finsteraarhorn hut. |
![]() The evening "scene" on the deck of the Finsteraarhorn hut, the snow banks of a few days ago still haven't melted... |
![]() At last a purely sunny day. We head for the Gross Wannenhorn. |
![]() Starting the climb in the early morning, the Finsteraarhorn in the back. |
![]() Near the summit. |
![]() On top of Ole Smokey... that is the Gross Wannenhorn, with the Matterhorn and Weisshorn on the far distant horizon. |
The Aletsch Glacier flows down toward the Rhone valley. Move the scroll bar for a panorama. Mouse over the image for labels. |
![]() On our last day we climbed up over the Vorder Galmihorn to make our exit southwards. |
![]() Leaving the Fiescher Glacier and Gross Wannenhorn behind. |
![]() Approaching the high point. |
![]() From this col it's a loooooong straight shot down the Bachital to the village of Reckingen. We pause on the summit before heading off down the hill. |
![]() On top of the Vorder Galmihorn. The peaks in the background, from left to right: the Schönbühlhorn, Fiescher Gabelhorn, Äbeni Flue, and Gletscherhorn. |
![]() Striding out on perfect corn in the Bachital. |
![]() The snow turned heavy as the morning warmed abruptly. Hiking down into summer meadows, we reach Reckingen. |
![]() And the train! A great way to end a ski season for the record books. Thanks again, Fred! |
