Ortler ski tour day to day description and photos

Day 5 - Branca hut to Pizzini hut

On this day we head back to the north to the Pizzini hut. Again we have options as to how to get there. If we did not reach the Branca hut via the Cevedale-Pasquale Col and if conditions seem safe to head over that way, we may ski up to the col from the south and descend the Cedec glacier to the hut. There are lots of crevasses on this descent, but they only make the trip more memorable as we link up long pitches of open terrain.

More often, we skin up the road to the hut and, after a snack and a cup of cappuccino at the Pizzini hut, we make a long lap up the gentle glacier to the north to the Col de la Pale Rosse, returning to the hut in time for a late lunch or an “aperitif” before dinner.

Maurizio serves lunch at the Pizzini hut.

After lunch, and afternoon lap up to the Col Pale Rosse. Gran Zebru is the large peak on the right, Cima Palle Rosse on the left.

Nearing the col...

High on the Gran Zebru glacier, the slopes of Monte Pasquale loom across the valley.

We enjoy a sunny viewpoint near the col.

Another fine Italian meal at the Pizzini hut.

Evening alpenglow over Pizzo Tresero from the Pizzini hut dining room.

Mmmm... no words needed!
