Joel Nyquist on the Mönch, Jägihorn and in the Gorner Gorge • August 23 - 25, 2012

Joel was back after his a Karl's Mont blanc climb some 2 week earlier in the season. This time with his sights on the Mönch, Jungfrau and Eiger. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas....

We did, indeed start with the Mönch. Here Joel enjoys a few morsels of Kendal Mint Cake.

Another party on the Mönch.

Looking down the Aletsch glacier from near the Jungfraujoch.

With a quick dlimb of the Mönch, we had time to enjoy the more normal touristic attractions.

Open to interpretation....

Careful, the floor of the Ice Palace is, well, icy.

With unsettled weather in the forecast and very high winds aloft, we decided to go rock climbing. Alpendurst is the route name and the peak is the Jägihorn.

A view of the south face of the Jägihorn. The climb is perhaps 14 pitches at a consistent grade of about 5.6, or 4b-c.

Mouse over to see the approximate line.

As we were just starting and impressive icefall let go from the glacier between the Fletschhorn (on the left) and the Lagginhorn (on the right).

Video of the icefall between the Fletchhorn and Lagginhorn.

Joel on Alpendurst.

Nasty weather over the Dom, from the summit of the Jägihorn.

With more rain in the forecast, we finished off with a fun ride down the Gorner Gorge.

One of the easier sections.

A brief downclimb leads to the Tarzan Swing.
