Jim Severance, Chamonix touring • February 22, 2018

Jim joined Mark for 3 days of Chamonix touring. Just after a big wet storm, we had to choose carefully. We began with Mont Buet, then onto Mont Colmet in Italy, and finished with the Col du Passon with a summit of the Tête Blanche.

The morning of our Mont Buet climb. Looking promising.

Skinning up out from under the cloud.

Unfortunately the cloud seemed to rise as we did.

Finally almost on the summit, we completely break free of the fog.

From the summit of Mont Buet, a great view of the Mont Blanc Massif.

On the way down we descended back into the fog. Finally, after a challenging route finding exercise, we break out down below the ceiling.

Our next outing was to Mont Comet, in Italy. A perfect day.

Almost on the summit.

Mont Blanc and Jim, on Mont Colmet.

We found some great snow on the descent.

And more...

For our last day of touring, we climbed up over the Col du Passon. Here's the slightly ominous view from the Argentière Glacier.

Rising up above the glacier.

And into the couloir that leads to the Col. Excellent conditions.

But the sunshine would not last. High cloud came in, with flat light. Here we are, arriving on the summit of the Tête Blanche. The long ski down was actually pretty good.
