The Krumpe/Contarino family • August 1 - 3, 2011

Andy Krumpe, Carla Contarino and their son Peter came over to Zermatt for a last vacation together before Peter leaves the nest for college! Kathy got to do some climbing with them during their trip.

On top of the Riffelhorn, from left to right are Peter, Carla, Andy.

Andy surmounts a steep step on the ridge of the Riffelhorn, high above the Gorner Glacier.

Rappeling off the last steep step with Monte Rosa behind.

The next day we switched to glacier gear for a climb of the Breithorn.

A gorgeous day on the sumit with a clear view as far as the horizon. We traversed the main summit from east to west for a bit of variety. Dent d'Hérens, the Matterhorn, and the Dent Blanche in the background.

On the summit of the Breithorn! Castor, Liskamm and several of the Monte Rosa peaks are visible behind.

On our third and final day together, we planned to climb the Allalinhorn. High winds and thunderstorms were forecast, so we got and early start and tried to outrun the weather. Though the day looks fine in this shot, the winds were cold and fierce as we neared the col.

Shortly before our turn-around, the winds got very gusty and the summit disappeared in blowing fog. We opted for discretion, it being the better part of valor as they say.

Another party gathers for discussion in the gathering wind and cloud.
