Photo Information - Haute Route

Return to the July 2001 Newsletter page.

Kathy is having a peek back down the long slope that leads up to the Plateau du Couloir on the "Classic" Haute Route. This is the key and crux section of the Haute Route and proved t be a considerable challenge for early pioneers of the route. These days, with the Valsorey Hut, lightweight aluminum crampons and such, it is not so formidable an obstacle.

It is still a very steep slope, however, and most parties rope up for it, carrying skis on packs. One needs to make an early start here, not only because it is a long way to the next hut and good snow conditions don't last throughout the day, but also to be sure the slope is climbed in the cool of the morning.

The peaks of the Mont Blanc Massif can be seen behind.
