Photo Information - On Alpamayo's Summit

Return to the July 2001 Newsletter page.

Paul Scanlon straddles the sharp summit ridge of Alpamayo. Topping out on this climb is quite an experience. The last pitch up is a steep 70 degree gully. And, on arriving at the crest, it is quite a surprise to see that it is at least as steep on the other side of the peak.

On this particular day, the could obscured all of our views. In fact, when we left camp in the wee hours of the morning we were not at all convinced that we would be able to climb. But, in the end, getting up early and starting paid off, as we were the only climbers on the peak that day, despite more than a dozen others at high camp who were hoping to climb.
